FASHION FOR
FIDO

-- Sure, you could buy pet accessories at Petco. But the advantage of
shopping in New York City is having access to small boutiques carrying
cutting-edge
merchandise not available at mega-stores.
For fashion hounds, the city's most stylish retail destination is Trixie
+ Peanut Pet
Emporium (23 E. 20th St., between Broadway and Park Avenue South; [212]
358-0881).
A veritable Barney's for pets, the store is a chic showcase for edgy pet
designs, and a
favorite of animal lovers like Charlize Theron, Renée Zellweger
and Drew Barrymore.
Along the wall are handsome sculptures of dogs' heads by a talented, Brooklyn-based
artist named, simply, Thad.
"We didn't want it to look like a pet store," explains Trixie
+ Peanut owner Susan Bing.
"We wanted it to be a fashion lifestyle boutique for animal lovers."
Whether you want to drop a little dough or a lot, you're sure to walk
away with an innovative
gift.
Because the stylish New York pooch can't sleep on any old blanket, there's
an impressive
selection of beds, including the Burrowing Dog Bed ($49), a miniature
sleeping bag.
It was created by the one-name designer Gaston for his beloved dachshund,
Allora. Like
the rest of her breed, Allora loves to tunnel under the blankets at night.
There's no shortage of amusing toys, including plush squeakers called
"Chewish Toys," in
the shape of a bagel or a bone embroidered with the word "Kosher"
($8-$15).
There's also a full range of canine apparel, including leashes, halters
and raincoats ($120-
$150) by Koya Design. Koya is a Maltese whose owner, Lisa Paule, was motivated
by her
distaste for most small-dog garb.
"I don't like anything costumey on my dog - I prefer him to look
sleek and hip," says Paule.
And for those who want their small-dog carrier to resemble a chic designer
handbag, Koya
Design offers an elegant style in lavender leather, lined with Chanel-worthy
raw-silk
boucle ($450).
